Augustina has a nice compact body and gorgeous wool.  She does well but with Alba also competing, Augustina had yet to win an open Best In Show.  Her day finally came!

In show B at the CRCS show, Augustina won over Alba and received BOB from judge Kendal Bledsoe then judge Kathi Groves picked her as the open Best In Show winner.   Never give up, Augustina finally won an open Best In Show.

Augustina has a great day, she also won the BOB in show C and at the Best In Show table, judge Jennifer Milburn awards Augustina the Reserve In Show.

The Best In Show prize on the upper left is won by Alba as we learned yesterday.  The Best In Show prize on the upper right and the Reserve In Show prize are won by Augustina.

Monterey was in the cool 60s with sea breeze while othere areas were in the 90s and 100s.  We are wearing jackets and sweats during the entire show.   It was a very comfortable and rewarding day.

In show A, judge Maddie Pratt from Michigan awards the Best In Show to Betty's English Angora white senior doe Chu's Alba.

Alba sitting pretty in the sun. Alba is in her 14-month coat but still fresh and prime.  Her wool is full of density and her texture makes grooming a pleasant task.

The Best In Show prize on the upper left is won by Alba.  Two more prizes? Did Alba win those too? Stay tuned.

Old and New Friends at Monterey

This is a photo taken at the 1997 ARBA convention at Madison, Wisconsin.   Randy Shumaker was the judge for English Angora.  Randy moved to CA in 1994 before he became a judge.   In 1997, it was the second year that he judged in the ARBA conventions, and he judged English Angora and Giant Angora.   He awarded the English Angora BOB to the chocolate tort senior doe bred and shown by Pete Chavez and Lori Williamson and the BOSB to the blue tort senior buck bred and shown by Betty Chu.   Old memories again?  Yes and no.

It's a show day at Monterey on July 31, 2022.  See who are in the picture? Betty, Randy and Lori!  We are not talking about just "remember when", we are talking about the current, the most recent show day.   Randy is in charge of CRCS shows that is going on at Monterey, Betty is an exhibitor and Lori shows up unexpectedly.    We are reunited in a photo after 25 years.  How do we look?  Do we look OK after 25 years?   Pete arrived a bit late, so he is not in this photo but we'll see him in the next photo.

The Angora Group, from left to right are Casey Jones, Lori Williamson, Pete Chavez, Pearl Chavez, guest CeCe, Carol Green, Betty Chu and Pattee Singer.   Casey and Lori overlapped in showing English Angora in the mid 1990s, Carol and Pattee were yet to start in the wonderful world of Angoras.   Pearl and CeCe were yet to be born in the mid 1990s.

Lori visits with Chris Zemny.  Chris judged our rabbits often during the 1990s.

Lori with her daughter Pearl and guest CeCe.   Another daughter Chloe left early for her job.  Here is one of the posts that has both Pearl and Chloe's photos:

CeCe is an exchange student from China.   Lori has been hosting exchange students from China for over 15 years, each would stay for 2 to 4 years until they completed their study.  CeCe has been with the family for 3 years now.

Remember When: 1991 ARBA Convention Show Results and Prizes

It was Suzanne Brady's first convention as well as the first year that she became my rabbit partner.   I had a litter with two bucks and two does, shared a buck and a doe with her.   The tort doe Chu's Sweety Pie went on to win the BOB at the 1991 convention.   My other bucks and does won BOSB, Best Colored Wool, Best White Wool and Best Overall Wool.   These four rabbits are on the table to have a group photo.

Both Suzanne and I were very happy to get this result in such a big show. The four winners are half brother and sisters, all share the same daddy Chu's Cowboy.    Will post about this remarkable buck in a future post.

Here are some of the prizes, beautiful coffee cups.   I have been using two of them in the last 30 years and they still look brand new.  These four are in storage, they are brand new "antiques".

Here are three more cups, probably considered as beer mugs.  Since I don't drink, no beer had ever gone into these cups.  They are also brand new "antiques".

Remember When: 1991 ARBA Convention at Pomona, CA

The 1991 ARBA convention was held at Pomona, CA.   Suzanne Brady wearing long hair and I are at the NARBC booth.   The person on the left looks like Chata Clayton but I am not sure.  The booth was decorated and staffed by California Angora Rabbit Society (CARS), the counterpart of NCAG in So. CA.   You may notice that the NARBC logo has two rabbits, the English Angora and French Angora.   The Satin Angora was accepted into SOP in 1987 and the Giant Angora was accepted in 1988, the NARBC logo had yet to catch up to the change from 2 breeds to 4 breeds in 1991.

The NARBC occupied double spaces, one space for club stuff and the other for displaying the entries of wool, skein and garment contests.   In front of the WSG display are Suzanne Brady, Betty Chu, Chris Oliver and Sandy Kelly.   Sandy Kelly was the president of NCAG at the time, Betty the secretary, Suzanne the vice president.   Chris Oliver flew in from MA, she was an associate member.  You may notice the garment just behind Sandy Kelly, it's a basket weave sweater.   As I mentioned in the 1990 post, the basket weave pattern was very popular in the 80s and early 90s, we all try to make sweaters or vests with that pattern.

From left to right are: Betty Chu, Susan Conley and Suzanne Brady.    Susan Conley was the queen of Angora in the early to mid 1980s.   She was the number 1 English Angora breeder in the nation when I started.

From left to right are: Betty Chu, Janet Jackson from Michigan and Suzanne Raap from Iowa.

While other breeds were in stacked coops, the Angoras were given one tier wire bottom coops.  Poops and pee dropped to the ground that was protected with plastic sheets and shavings.   It was a treat to have such a set up.  Never before or after we were given such great arrangements.
