Youth Dress Up Contest at San Jose Show

At the CRCS shows on Saturday, there is a youth dress up contest to give kids another fun activity in addition to showing rabbits.   This fun thing is staged during the lunch break.

Kids are very enthusiastic about the activity.   On the left are Salene Durate and Rick Porter of the Fair office taking photos and watching the kids having a good time.   The emcee is Jason.

Jason T. is the superintendent of the rabbit show as well as the emcee of the dress up contest.

Jason is a natural to emcee such a fun activity, kids enjoy it, and we had a good time watching it.

Salene on the left is instrumental in getting the rabbit shows back to the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds at San Jose.  Finding Jason to work as the super and emcee is definitive a plus for the show.   This is the first time Jason works as a rabbit show superintendent, he is better than a lot of seasoned supers.

Friday Night Angora Judging at San Jose

Two clubs cooperate to put on shows at San Jose.   On Friday night, the single show is sponsored by Santa Clara County Rabbit and Cavy shows.

Allen Mesick is our Friday night judge. On the table are two colored bucks.

While judge Allen is examining the English Angora colored senior doe, the French Angoras are being put into their coops.

The colored senior doe is the BOB winner.

There are 15 French Angora on the table.

The French Angora fawn senior doe has a very nice coat.

Judge Allen goes inside the senior doe's wool to check on texture.

The two colored junior does are almost old enough to be in the senior class.

Angora Judges at the Reno ARBA Convention 2022

Johnny Haussener is the judge for English Angora and Giant Angora at the Reno convention.   Though Johnny lives in PA, he has been a very popular judge in CA/NV area.   Our blog has featured him as far back as in 2010 when he first received his judge's license, see

Northern California Angora Guild: New Judge Johnny H. Visits CA (ncag.blogspot.com)

Johnny is also known as one of the major characters in movie "Rabbit Fever" that started filming in 2001 when he was still a youth.

Travis Finkle is the judge for French Angora and Satin Angora.  He specifically asked to judge Satin Angora as he used to breed and show Satin Angora when he lived in CA around 2012.  Yes, he was one of us Angora exhibitors locally.   He received his judge's license around 2009 and judged in the first WCC that was held at Monterey, see:

Northern California Angora Guild: Katianna Wins All Breed Best In Show (ncag.blogspot.com)

then he judged in WCC again in 2011, see:

Northern California Angora Guild: Lucianna Wins Champion Of Champions (ncag.blogspot.com)

Though I do not have either French Angora or Satin Angora at the Reno Convention, Travis and I still renewed our friendship and had a photo taken together.

Old Friend Cheryl

At Reno ARBA convention, Cheryl says, "Betty, let's have a selfie".

Betty says, "Let's find someone to take a pic of us".

Cheryl is Cheryl Eng-Link, most will recognize her as the chair of the ARBA Standard Committee in the earl 2010s.   Cheryl and I started corresponding around 1991 and met in person in 1992, she was not yet a judge.  We had a lot in common in addition to be rabbit lovers, she was a high school principal and I was a college professor.   There were so few Asians involved in raising rabbits, we were standouts for being different.  A bit later Sandra Tsukiyama from Hawaii became well-known for her DR cooking column.   People got mixed up on three of us quite a lot during conventions in the old days.  We were thinking about making T-shirts for each of us:

"I am Sandra, not Cheryl, not Betty"
"I am Betty, not Sandra, not Cheryl"
"I am Cheryl, not Betty, not Sandra".

Luckily the rabbit fever has been exported to Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Philippines in recent years.   There are lots of Asians participating in ARBA conventions each year.  Three of us now blend in very well.
